    „Both“ is the new album by Swiss composer and saxophonist Marc Jufer. This double-LP, to be released on vinyl, features collaborations with numerous improvising musicians from all over Switzerland. During lockdown, Jufer invited each of them to work on duo-recordings with him. The outcome is a beautifully distinct and colorful collection of pieces, all connected by the saxophone playing of the initiator, that oscillates from moonstruck pacing to wild-expressionist passages. The pieces are as different as the duo-partners. Each of the compositions stands autonomously, while existing as their own galaxy within the sound-universe of „Both“. Abstract yet clear, Marylène Jufer, the composer´s wife, created the artwork for the cover, which is also included in the double-LP as a poster.

« Both » est né de la nécessité de rester actif dans la création et le partage de la musique durant cette période si compliquée que l’on traverse en ce moment. Jouer avec d’autres personnes est primordial pour le processus créatif et vital pour mon propre équilibre. Une composition n’a aucun sens avant d’être jouée. C’est sous leurs doigts, dans leur souffle et surtout dans leur esprit que les musiciennes et musiciens leur donnent vie.

« Both » c’est 16 morceaux enregistrés en duo entre février et mai 2021, composés spécifiquement pour chacune des personnes qui m’a fait le bonheur d’accepter mon invitation. Certaines et certains amis de longues dates, d’autres avec qui je n’avais encore jamais joué. Il y a même eu des premières rencontres, directes en face des micros.

J’ai énormément appris et je remercie toutes ces magnifiques personnes qui ont, de près ou de loin, participé à la réalisation de cet album. Je suis reconnaissant et tellement chanceux d’avoir pu vivre ces moments intimistes partagés avec autant de sincérité et de générosité.

Je terminerais par dire que « Both » ne serait pas ce qu’il est sans la femme qui partage ma vie depuis si longtemps, qui m’a donné trois filles magnifiques et qui a sublimé cet album en véritable oeuvre d’art.

« Both » was born from the need to remain active in the creation and sharing of music during these difficult times that we are currently going through.
Playing with other people is essential for the creative process and vital for my own balance. A composition is meaningless before being played. Musicians brings it to life under their fingers, in their breath and above all, in their mind.

« Both » is 16 duet pieces, recorded between February and May 2021, composed specifically for each of the people who made me happy by accepting my invitation. Some are long time friends, some are people I had never played with before. There were even some first meetings in front of the microphones.

I learned a lot and thank all these wonderful people who, in one way or another, participated in the realization of this album. I’m grateful and so lucky to have lived these intimate moments shared with so much sincerity and generosity.

Finally, I would like to say that « Both » would not be what it is without the woman who has shared my life for so long, who gave me three wonderful daughters and who sublimated this album into a true work of art.
